British relay teams rise to occasion to progress to finals

Justin Gatlin stuns Usain Bolt to win 100m world title

The world will get a chance to see Bolt run competitively for one last time as he lines up for Jamaica in the 4x100 metres relay event at the IAAF World Athletics championships in London.

This time, Bolt finished third in the 100-meter dash at world championships.

After a short while, though, he rose gingerly to his feet and limped across the line to huge cheers from the 56,000 crowd.

Bolt ran the anchor leg for Jamaica and pulled away down the home straight, having taken the baton just behind France and China.

The 31-year old legend hugged and congratulated both Gatlin and Coleman after the race, he also went on to say that Gatlin has "served his time". Win or lose, Saturday's race will be his last before he hangs up his spikes.

It was a disappointing end for Bolt and his legions of fans, as a year ago he announced that London would be his retirement party. Bolt is not the one that was crushing everything in its path with chronos from elsewhere, but this outcome was finally like a relief to an athlete who has dedicated his life to his sport from a very young age.

No golden ending as Farah signs off with Worlds silver
Mo Farah will also be in action on the penultimate day of the championships in his swansong race, the men's 5,000 metres. Farah was less than a second back in 13:33.22, the Kenyan-born America Paul Chelimo winning bronze in 13:33.30.

Bolt will be joined in the heats by a supporting cast of Tyquendo Tracey, Julian Forte and Michael Campbell - a few of the athletes who will be charged with keeping the island in the forefront of global sprinting in the years to come. The victor of every individual Olympic and world championships final in the 100 and 200 that he has started-Bolt was disqualified for a false start in the 100 at the 2011 world championships-he couldn't walk down the United States' 21-year-old Christian Coleman (second in 9.94), who burst out of the starting blocks, and was unable to hold off Gatlin's frantic push over the last 30 meters of the battle. "I think we need to do a better job of educating all of what has been going on".

The United States has long dominated this event at Olympic and world championships level and will be favoured to claim another title in London after clocking the fastest heat time of 3:21.66. The coup de grace happened through the fault of Gatlin, that person wanted to secretly see him back at the top.

"It probably would've been even worse", Bolt said. His 9.85-second run was the third fastest in Olympic history. It was Gatlin in 2004.

Last Sunday morning at my church I met with a few friends and we spoke about that race. You never know the end.

Unlike any other superstar sprinter, unlike Carl Lewis or Michael Johnson, after winning a race, the drama has just begun for Bolt as he stops for every selfie, holding his now famous and iconic pose for every photographer. It felt like it was there but the reason I lost because I couldn't get it. "I've done all I can do for my sport and for myself".
