Melbourne is growing faster than Sydney.

Alarm about the change led a former head of the bureau, Bill McLennan, to describe it as "without doubt, the most significant invasion of privacy ever perpetrated on Australians by the ABS".

But that gap is being cut down by the week.

Australians are getting older. Although at the 2011 census, 89.5 per cent were born in Australia.

Americans were also seen to be less inclined to be "absolutely certain" that God exists, with the percentage of people sharing that specific view dropping to 63 percent in 2014 from 71 percent in 2007.

The indigenous population has risen.

When undercount is adjusted for, the ABS estimates that 786,689 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should have been counted in the census. The Apple Isle also recorded Australia's highest median age (42 years), ahead of South Australia (40 years). Eight in ten people live in the eastern states (NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT).

There are now more people in Australia with "no religion" than who identify as Catholics, still the most popular religion nationally. About 29.6 percent of Australians chose the "no religion" box - up from 22.6 percent in 2011 - and 9.6 percent chose not to answer the religion question at all.

Sixty percent of census participants indicated some religious affiliation. In 2016, women made up 50.5 per cent of the population with men making up 49.5 per cent.

Nepali was the most common, with.5 per cent speaking Nepali, .4 per cent speaking Mandarin and 0.3 per cent speaking Malayam, Tagalog and Sinhalese.

But none of those countries are where Australia gets most of its migrants from.

More than one-quarter of Australians are now born overseas, with England remaining the dominant single source of expatriates.

For the first time in history, the majority of Australians born overseas are from Asia and not Europe.

Nearly a year after Australia fumed at computer screens while trying to fill out the 2016 Census, the data crunchers have fed the data into machines to give us a new idea of ourselves.

"It is a tipping point", said Ms Taylor.

Lindsay Liu moved to Australia after discovering the "beautiful" country with "clean" air as an worldwide student six years ago.

"It doesn't really impact on data quality so much as it does potentially impact data integration or matching activities", she said.

According to the 2016 Census, Australia's population has grown to 24.4 million at the end of 2016 - up 8.2% from five years before and 42% since I arrived in this "lucky country".

Finally, even if the policy responses weren't large, the most recent federal budget and election both had a heavy focus on housing affordability and home ownership.

Dubbo is becoming more culturally diverse according to the latest census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, but it is starting from a low point.

The census shows that 44.7 per cent of families were couples with children, while 37.8 per cent were couples without children. But can we trust the numbers?

Renters are forking out more, with the median household weekly rent rising to $335.

Rising rents and mortgage coupled with stagnant wage growth are making us work harder on tighter budgets.

Across the country, the median personal income was $662 a week, up from $577 in 2011. Cities have absorbed the bulk of the migrants, with most settling in Sydney and Melbourne. Five years ago it was 25 per cent and in the 1960s it was less than one per cent. This declined over the past five years to 66.7%.

The results of the 2016 Australian Census have demonstrated a big swing to urban living across the country.
