Hong Kong activists hold China protest ahead of Xi trip

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong for the first time as leader to mark the 20th anniversary of the city's handover to China

The banner also bore a slogan familiar from the 2014 Occupy Central movement in the city: "The people of Hong Kong want universal suffrage!"

"'One country, two systems' is proving to be more complex and more challenging than originally expected", she said, but she hopes outstanding issues "will be resolved in the coming years, sooner rather than later".

Fast forward nine years, however, and the former British colony's first post-handover generation is increasingly turning its back on the mainland.

"Hong Kong people will continue to fight for democracy until the day we get our rights", said Wong, who later joined other protesters in chants of "the world is watching, only Xi Jinping can not see". And like Hu, Xi will come to city feeling the city's deep discontent over a litany of very familiar problems. "Even if you ask me 100 times, I would say the same thing". Hong Kong is the only place on Chinese soil which holds a major public commemoration of the event.

According to a University of Hong Kong survey released last week that polled 120 youths, only 3.1 per cent of those aged between 18 to 29 identified themselves as "broadly Chinese". China has promised Hong Kong's capitalist system will remain unchanged for "at least" 50 years, but it has not clarified what happens after that.

In 1997 that lease expired and Britain returned Hong Kong in its entirety to China under a 50-year agreement created to protect its semi-autonomous status, freedoms and way of life.

Hong Kong's economic growth was better under China than it would have been under Britain, added legislator Felix Chung, head of the pro-establishment Liberal Party. The curriculum was eventually shelved. Once known as Victoria after the British queen, Hong Kong island's waterfront formed the core of the British settlement after Hong Kong island was handed over as a colony in 1842.

The article called the PLA's 6,000-troop garrison key to defending Hong Kong, and said the garrison was studying "potential safety risks" to the region of 7.3 million people.

"You see how mass surveillance is so pervasive in China". BidaskClub downgraded shares of China Mobile (Hong Kong) from a hold rating to a sell rating in a report on Wednesday, June 14th. "It's an invisible fear".

The recent tensions have drawn "serious attention" from Beijing, which can't afford to see pro-independence sentiment in Taiwan and Hong Kong at the same time, said Liu Shanying, political researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Over the past week, Lam has made a number of comments that have raised eyebrows in Hong Kong. Some argued, however, that this was less of a concession than it seemed because the retention of Hong Kong's distinct identity would set an example for the "renegade province" of Taiwan and help persuade its citizens that reunification with the mainland would offer more benefits than costs.

But this patriotic push could trigger a greater backlash.

However, diplomatic sources in Hong Kong said they were seeing a broader rush for foreign citizenship which they attributed to concerns over the territory's future.

"I'm not at all anxious about the future of Hong Kong", says Lam, who reasons it is still a prosperous business gateway between the mainland and the wider world.

One of the abducted booksellers, Lee Bo, drew global attention because he was a dual Hong Kong and British citizen, prompting London to rebuke China for a "breach" of Hong Kong's law.

"China is simply unfit to be governing Hong Kong - it's a different way of thinking, a different way of life". "But the two sides should try to understand each other more".

03/04/2015 - Rosenblatt Securities began new coverage on China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd giving the company a " rating.

"Twenty years is just a start", said Yoshi Yue, a business student who has been in the city for three years.

"Seekers of "Hong Kong independence" account for a very small number, but they might lead Hong Kong to chaos if they continue making troubles".
